Changing the Battery in Your Mini Key Fob
The key fob is a simple way to lock and unlock your vehicle from some distance. It can also trigger the panic button on your car, which can scare off thieves.
If your fob stops working the device can be repaired with some simple steps. Make sure that the battery is brand new. Remove the battery from the ignition and then press the lock button quickly three times.
Battery
Switching the battery on your key fob is one of the easiest solutions. The key fob is powered by a tiny coin-shaped 3V battery (CR2032 or CR2025) that is available in general stores or home improvement stores and some auto parts stores. Be sure to use the latest batteryolder batteries are typically not suitable for any purpose and could damage the circuit board.
You'll want to start by opening the fob. It may be a bit tight, but with the help of a flat screwdriver you should be able separate the halves. Then, fit the screwdriver in the seam on both sides of the fob, and then lift the clips that hold it. They are easily broken, so take your time and work slowly.
Reassemble the fob after replacing the battery, and test to determine if it functions as it should. If it does not work after pressing the button a few times, check that the contacts are clean. You can also try it with another key fob to determine whether the issue is specific to a specific key. If not, there may be another reason that caused the key fob not to function. It could be a worn-out button, as an example. mini cooper car keys will only make the button function occasionally and not always.
Interference
The key fob is powered by a tiny transmitter that sends out an extremely short-range signal to a receiver inside your car. Its purpose is to allow your car to recognize the fob and unlock its doors when you approach and start when you hit the ignition button inside.
Interference can sometimes interfere with communication. If you charge your second-generation Apple Pencil while holding the fob (via iGeneration) it could block you from unlocking your vehicle.
Other electronic devices operating on the same frequency may also interfere with the fob's signal. Garage door openers or tire-pressure monitoring devices can also be affected. It is even possible that an RF transmitter within your home could be interfering with the fob's signal, however, this is difficult to determine without the assistance of a qualified test.
It's also possible that the key fob needs to be reprogrammed. The transmitter inside the key fob needs to be recognized by Mini's receiver. A unique code is then used for each pairing. Fobs have to be reprogrammed after they are disconnected or replaced, either after purchasing a new one and, in some instances, when the battery is changed. Follow the steps in your owner’s manual to program a key fob, or consult a dealer.
Chips with a problem
Modern electronic key fobs provide convenience and functionality over traditional manual keys, but they are also more susceptible to being damaged. A defective chip is among the most frequent problems that can cause your key fob from functioning correctly. Fortunately, it's usually an simple fix.
If your fob is constantly not turning on your car, this could be a sign that the chip has become defective. It is often possible to fix the problem by replacing the battery. This is a low-cost and easy solution that can be found at any hardware store or large retailer. Make sure you buy an alternative battery that is compatible with your specific model of car to avoid further problems.
It is also important to ensure that the fob is not exposed to soapy or water residue. Water can cause corrosion and affect the circuitry. If this is the case, you'll have to wash it with isopropyl alcohol or an electronic cleaner prior to putting in an entirely new battery.
After the old battery has been replaced, it is recommended to test the functionality of the fob before driving the vehicle. With a voltmeter, test the voltage of the new battery to determine whether it is at an acceptable level. If not then it may be necessary to replace the entire chip in the remote. A trained dealer technician can help determine the best solution for your vehicle.
